Young Life to Aransas Pass – Progress Report

We continue to move forward on bringing Young Life to Aransas Pass.   Last summer through donations from an anonymous source we were able to send 17 kids to camp at Frontier Ranch in Colorado.   Late last year we were able to bring Rebecca Hillis on as the Young Life leader in Aransas Pass, and they have started to have Club meeting and expand the program into the Aransas Pass Schools.

Aransas Pass is unique to other communities in the Coastal Bend, because it is SO young:

  • 30% of our population is under the age of 18, over half are in single family homes.
  • 22% never graduate high school and over 60% are economically disadvantaged.
  • Aransas Pass just passed a $17.9 million bond election to try and get ahead of this explosion in our school rolls.
  • The Aransas Pass Youth Program offers great services for K-8, but no one is currently reaching out to our teens, grades 9-12.
  • Left unserved, we run a much higher risk that these kids will fail, increasing crime, teen pregnancy and continuing this spiral of poverty.

Young Life is a Christian Youth Mentoring program that has been around for over 75 years, and is a proven outreach for meeting and loving these kids right where they are in their daily school and sports activities, and providing them the love, leadership and mentoring to get them on the right track.  Rockport and Portland have seen amazing results from this program, and we are currently exploring the option of bringing Young Life to Aransas Pass.

The Blessings Shop

For the past decade The Blessings Shop thrift store has been serving the needs of the local community in Aransas Pass by providing good, gently used clothing, dishes, household goods, tools and other items at rock-bottom prices.  This 501(c)3 organization also provides a tax-deductible drop-off location for local people to bring in their donations of clothes and other goods.

Hurricane Harvey Recovery

Within a couple of days of the impact of the Category 4 storm, First Christian Church jumped into action, creating a relief station to begin to accept, process and distribute supplies.  We established a donor advised fund with the National Christian Foundation, and started raising hurricane relief funds.

At the end of that first week Christ Chapel Church out of Fort Worth flew in and brought us 5 chain saws, with the promise of funds and help, and almost every weekend they brought a large crew of workers to assist, and continued to bring work crews through the remainder of 2018.

With the combination of donations and volunteers, we were able to get relief and recovery supplies, material and volunteers to hundreds if not thousands  of storm victims and their families.  Thanks to Christ Chapel, McCoy's and all of our other donors that came to our relief.  We couldn't have done it without your amazing support and sacrifice, and God Bless you all!

McCoy's Hurricane Harvey Relief

We reached out to McCoy's Building Supply, and they sprang into action setting us up an account and giving us a 10% discount on top of their best contractor price, and then donated all of the material to fix our roof.  McCoy's played a huge role in helping us expand our relief efforts through essentially getting our materials at cost.    https://www.mccoys.com/harvey
